'Mr. GOP’ Tom Latham Blames ‘Bipartisan Bickering’ For Lack of Accomplishments in Washington

Hypocritical Claim from Latham Who Voted with Republicans 92% of the Time

Des Moines – In Fort Dodge and Boone this week, Tom Latham blamed ‘bipartisan bickering’ for the lack of accomplishments in Congress. However, Latham voted 92% of the time with the Republican Party at the bidding of George Bush, hardly a sign of bipartisanship in Washington.

“Tom Latham is blaming a lack of bipartisanship while at home, and then going to Washington and voting 92% of the time with his party. That is an even higher percentage than Steve King,” said Jan Bauer. “Tom Latham can’t hide from his Republican voting record when it is convenient.” Latham’s claims of a lack of bipartisanship in Congress:

''About all we're seeing is a bunch of bickering and partisan posturing,'' Latham said. (Fort Dodge Messenger, 7/1/08)
However, Latham said a high degree of "bipartisan bickering" has made it somewhat difficult to accomplish Congressional objectives.

"I don't see how anything gets done this year, unfortunately," Latham said. (Boone News Republican, 7/2/08

However, Latham voted the party line in Washington:

· Latham voted 92% of the time with the Republican Party in the current Congressional session.

· Latham has voted 7 times to continue the war in Iraq.

· Latham voted against a 2008 bill to provide tax incentives for renewable fuel production. (H.R. 2776) In 2007, he also voted against tax incentives for renewable fuels and homegrown biofuels. (H.R. 3221)

· In 2006, Latham voted to cut $507 million for veteran’s healthcare in favor of tax cuts for people making more than a million dollars per year.

MCCAIN JUST LIKE BUSH ON THE ECONOMY: OUT OF TOUCH WITH AMERICANS' ECONOMIC STRUGGLES

Jobs numbers fell for the sixth straight month today as 62,000 American jobs were lost in June. Unemployment remains at a four-year high. Meanwhile McCain is in Mexico to tout his support of free trade policies that help CEOs but leave American workers behind. Like Bush, McCain is out of touch with American workers, and his economic policies would be more of the same.

After 8 years of Bush economics, America's families are hurting -- and McCain will be more of the same.

Jobs numbers have fallen for six straight months. Unemployment remains at a four-year high.Oil has reached a new record high price, the cost of everything from food to health care is rising and millions of Americans are at risk of losing their homes.

McCain's economic plan, like George Bush's, is filled with giveaways for CEOs and corporations, but gives very little to families. In addition to making the Bush tax cuts permanent, McCain offers massive new corporate tax cuts. While big oil and insurance companies get billions in tax breaks, middle class families get little.

McCain, like Bush, supports trade deals that help wealthy corporations, but hurt American workers.

o McCain is a big supporter of trade deals like NAFTA, which have devastated communities and cost American jobs. NAFTA has cost the U.S. more than 1 million jobs.

o McCain does not support blocking trade agreements because of labor and environmental issues.

McCain, like Bush, leaves American workers on their own. McCain is OUT OF TOUCH with the struggles facing American workers and has voted against protections for workers:

o McCain Straight Talk: Some Jobs '[Aren't] Gonna Stay in America ' In a town hall meeting in Salem , NH , in January, McCain said,"Some of those jobs are not in the right place." "I have to look you in the eye and give you some straight talk. If it's a low-paying job like in textiles that job isn't gonna stay in America ."
